Even if you rename the file with the appropriate extension, the Mac OS won't recognize the type from this alone - a legacy of the pre OS X type and creator codes. You will need to use a 3rd party utility to manually edit the file type to AIFF. I use File Buddy, which is shareware and does a whole lot more. There are several freeware apps to do this, too - a search at VersionTracker or MacUpdate should net you one - or you could use ResEdit. In any case, I know for a fact that this works - at least for me.
