Ironically, the man who wrote this died of a heroin overdose. So long, Bradley. If I was going to quote Sublime in this context, I'd have used the lyrics from 'What I Got':
"...I don't get angry when [your] mom smokes pot, hits the bottle and goes right to the rock"
This way you can mention more drugs in fewer lines, if that's your intention.

I believe you're referring to "Gomer" Pyle my friend, hence, I would not be surpised if Forrest was not, indeed, familiar with Gona Pyle.
Also, Vincent D'Onofrio had to gain 70 lbs for his role as Pvt. Pyle in that film, so in real life, prior to the time of filming, he was actually pretty slim.
