Ok, stand facing the castle and the drawbridge. High on each side of the doorway across the lava are two archers. Within the niche that contains the archer on the right is a switch. Shoot that switch and the drawbridge will rise. The switch that you mention activates a platform within the castle that leads down to a basement area.
