RED 1.1: Needs more duct tape
Posted By: Mark LevinDate: 4/24/04 8:19 a.m.

Most of the problems with this level are related to not having access to the pattern buffer, and it appears from the puzzling terminal and chip switch setup that the final flow was not what Ian had in mind at first. The original idea- letting the player save and giving him instructions upon reaching the reactor control room- seems like a much better plan for the level.

  • Remove the switch in the door that triggers the attack. This will make it possible to leave the room only after reading the terminal. (It's also possible to push this switch after reading the terminal, in which case it will go "clunk" audibly but nothing happens.
  • Remove infinitely regenerating Beasts. It's just unfair with a finite amount of ammo on the level to have such powerful enemies keep coming back, and there isn't really a way to avoid them.
  • Terminal, pattern buffer, and health charger are initially active. The health charger in that room, it turns out, is sunken into the console and emerges when the chip is inserted. The exact change I would make is to have the large switch enable the PB and raise the recharger as well as everything it already does.
  • Edit the terminal so that its instructions are correct for completing the modified level. The terminal's behavior (short message initially, pushing the nearby switch changes to longer message) should fit in nicely once it's enabled.
  • The smashable panel in the Hydroponics area will be changed to open the door to the cargo bay, not the exit of the level. It turns out I was wrong about the switches in the Volunteering for this level- this switch only opens the exit right now. Making it open the cargo bay makes the chip quest required to beat the level.
  • The chip switch in the reactor control room will now open the level exit.
