Quite by accident I discovered that you can actually activate the first switch Mark mentions (not the second which is always visible), without having to drop down the hole first. If you tab on the wall where that switch is located, then the switch activates and the platform over on the other side on the wall lowers. Thus dropping down the hole becomes unnecessary.
