Shareware Quake Guide

Quake Enemies

Note: I could only gather the creatures I encountered from the shareware version of Quake, so not all of the creatures will be referenced. Sorry! And these are the creatures that are in Medium difficulty. I think I missed one or two different monster species.

Rottweiler: Rottweilers are, of course, dogs, and while only encountered once in the shareware version, we are given hints that they often accompany Grunts, and maybe other units. They aren't very tough, but their bite does decent damage and they run rather quickly. When far away you usually have an advantage, but don't let them get too close, don't let them rush you, for they may be deadly. But you shouldn't have any real problems. Just a shotgun shell or two and you'll be good to go.

Grunt: Grunts are the most common enemy you'll face, the standard units of Quake's forces. They are slightly tougher than Rottweilers, given a quick, light plating of armor, since they are express recruits for military service and are often used as security guards. Grunts carry around shotguns and have good skill with them and also since shotgun shells move fast they can be hard to dodge, all this despite Grunts being quite easy to kill. They have good speed, too. Plus they are also the most common enemy pretty much, so they can come in groups and be a total pain, all those shotgun shells, and they can surround you. Still though, you wouldn't want to worry about them too much, since they are easily killed.

Ogre: Ogres, while not so likely to hit you and rather slow, plus quite limited in intelligence, are tough and in some cases, deadly. Ogres carry grenades and a chain-saw with them, and often you can see spots of blood on them and their weapons. But don't let that fool you, with enough skill you can even be less likely to be inflicted damage upon by an Ogre. Try not to get close or they will dish out a lot of damage on you with their chain-saw. Also try not to get hit or injured by any of an Ogre's grenades. If you dodge a lot and pump what you must into an Ogre, it'll be a newly opened worm buffet in no time.

Knight: Knights are simply strange things in armored suits, perhaps some of Quake's minions, that wield swords. They are very deadly with their swords and can take some good punishment before dying. You definitely don't want to get close to them or they'll slash you up with their sword. Knights are also very fast-moving, so you're going to have to run and dodge a lot when in vicinity of them. However, despite being fast, you can still take great advantage of the fact that Knights have no projectile attack, which can result in great success.

Fiend: Fiends are very strange looking creatures. They have blood splotted in their face and at the ends of their long, claws on each arm. They are fast, pretty tough, and when they get close to you, they slash at you with their claws and can be very deadly. Practice caution when in vicinity of these creatures.

Zombie: Zombies aren't all that dangerous, they are slow, stupid and aren't really dangerous... Usually. But! If you kill them, unless you killed them with an explosive weapon, they will stay on the ground for a couple seconds before eventually getting back up again, so you're going to want to kill them permanently using a grenade or rocket launcher, which will blow them up. They throw strangely infected pieces of flesh at you that do decent damage.

Scrag: Scrags are flying, manta-like creatures that float around and spit acid projectiles at you that do a good deal of damage and move pretty quickly. Just be careful, pump em' full of shells or nails or whatever sort of ammo in your weapon, and eventually you'll be just fine.

Quake Weapons

Note: These are only the weapons that you can get in the shareware version. I haven't managed to find out what other weapons there are in the full version yet. Sorry!

Axe: The Axe is a small-handle, small-blade weapon that you start out with aside from the shotgun, and is the only weapon that'll always be there, no matter what. Your axe is like in other games the beta weapon of the arsenal, a.k.a. dispersion pistol from Unreal, gauntlets from Quake III, etc. not an actual combat weapon, but it is at least unlimited in ammo. The axe is a weapon that should be used for finding secrets, destroying inanimate objects that need to be destroyed, and maybe dealing with some melee combat impaired enemies if you know what you're doing. Since it is melee it never becomes depleted. Nethertheless, if you only have this basically inferior substitute for a gun, run.

Shotgun: This is the other weapon you start out with. It has a decent rate of fire, good accuracy, and some good stopping power. A standard-issue rifle carried by many troops and guards, the shotgun is the firearm that grunts carry around. When used with experience and skill, the shotgun can remain a pretty useful weapon throughout the game. Good gun.

Double-Barreled Shotgun: The Double-Barreled Shotgun was a remake of the original shotgun. It is not as accurate and has a slower rate of fire than the original shotgun, but makes up for this by packing more substantial firepower. Know when to use the original shotgun or the d-b shotgun, because in the end, they're all trade-offs. Good gun.

Nail Gun: The Nail Gun may be possibly what it sounds like: a gun that fires nails. Perhaps it was the more advanced nails of the time that made nails' promotion to gun ammunition possible. The Nail Gun is sort of a machine gun, except for it uses spikes/nails rather than bullets. Fast and accurate, the Nail Gun, while considerably ammo-guzzling, can be very useful often depending on one's marksmanship. There are two barrels, one on the right and one on the left, which both fire the nails. Good gun.

Super Nail Gun: The Super Nail Gun is somewhat more powerful than the original Nail Gun, but instead of having two barrels, the SNG only shoots from one in the center. Use this when necessary, but still, sometimes it's more necessary to switch to the original. Good gun.

Grenade Launcher: The Grenade Launcher, while short-ranged and with a lack of firing rate delivers plenty of damage to the target/s when used properly. It is simple: the Grenade Launcher launches short-ranged yet powerful grenades. They will explode on impact when they hit an enemy, but if they hit a surface, then they will bounce off of different surfaces for a bit before standing still on a surface and then exploding. Good gun.
