In Response To: Re: My big RED apology (Jorge Salas)

: I disagree. I think that any film package that demonstrates completion of an
: entire scenario is VERY worthwhile... if only for its ability to serve as
: a "spoiler" or "hint book". I have to confess that I
: have delved into your Rubicon films more than once to get out of a
: situation that I was "stuck" in and couldn't figure out.

: So, even if you have to use the guns every once in a while, I still think a
: collection of films of RED is more than worthy.

: While I'm on the subject... (oh boy, get ready)...

: I would love to speak on a long cherished tradition in Marathon which I have
: come to question a bit as of late... the vidmasters challenge. I have
: recently reinstalled all three marathons and have been watching many
: films, especially Johns, Jims, etc. complete renditions in TC with fists
: only. True vidmasters in every sense of the word. :-)

: However, I have truly come to believe that the decision to use fists only
: almost all of the times is a mistake. Let's face it, its a bit boring, and
: I think that films lose quite a bit of style points because of it. I know
: that I am one sentence short of heresy when I say that... but one of the
: things that I truly loved about Myth films was that the focus was
: completely on the style in which levels were beaten. As much damage and as
: wild as possible was the moto.

: Now, TC with fists only is the ultimate nirvana of the vidmaster... but I
: don't think they are the most watchable of films all the time. I would
: much rather see a vidmaster get the fusion pistol out and mow down 4 major
: hunters, weaving, moving, showing style in the battle and making quick
: work of them than see them run around and around in circles throwing a
: punch here and there for 8 minutes till the hunters drop one by one. I
: guess I'm speaking from a purely entertainment viewpoint. Obviously,
: starting a level with only the pistol will necesitate lots of fist action,
: but bring out the guns! The vidmaster challenge should be ammended to
: include... "I will leave no ammo unused in my ruthless pursuit of the
: Phfor." :-)

: So, John, I would love to see films of you ripping into the hordes on RED
: without regards to whether it's fists only or not. I couldn't care less,
: as long as it's done with style, grace and fun.

: I'm not saying that TC fists only films don't have merit... they have the
: ultimate merit as far as vidmaster skill goes... however, I don't think
: they always make the best films.

Let me say for the record Jorge that I agree with everything you say. I have never, ever stated that I thought a "fists only" film was an entertaining film to watch. In general, it won't be. As I have said before, each person has to decide for themselves the answer to the question "Why would anyone care to vid a level of a scenario?" Each person will have their own answer. AS FOR ME, the overwhelming reason why I love to vid the levels of a scenario is simply "for the challenge". And to me, I can think of no greater challenge than to vid a level of a scenario using only my Fists. Am I trying to impress anyone with that? I am sure that is the impression of some people in the Marathon community. That is definitely not the case. I don't really care if anyone is impressed with my films. I do not even seek to entertain anyone. Other than the reason I just stated, "for the challenge", there is only one other reason why I would care to vid a level. And that is in the off chance that someone might want to view the film to help them see how to get through part of the level. If someone watches one of my films for that reason, and it happens to be rather long, then they can always fast forward to the part they wish to see.

As for RED, you will not see a vid package from me. Why? The main reason is that to be a "vid" film, the level must be completed on "Total Carnage" (Death Wish in RED). Sure, I could come up with some "spoiler films" (see more about that below), but I would never refer to them as vid films. I will not violate that sacred rule. Under vidmaster rules, not enough of the levels can be completed on Total Carnage to make a vid package worthwhile. IMHO

Having said that though, your previous reply Jorge got me interested in creating a set of "spoiler films". I am in the process of doing just that. Correct me if I am wrong, but it is impossible to complete the last level "How big's your can?" under vidmaster rules is it not?? The last level requires a certain weapon to activate the switches right? The only weapons available on that level are your claw and a "pistol". Neither of those seem to activate the switches. Can anyone else confirm that? If so, then a film for that level might be impossible.

Even so, I plan to film as many of the levels as possible. I will be doing them on Kindergarten. The purpose of them will be exclusively as "spoiler films". When I am satisfied that I have filmed all the levels I can, I will post them at Fileball.
