So... how do you pronounce S'pht?

Among other things...
I read over (twice) the S'pht link on Marathon's Story but am still fuzzy on a few things.
Who created them?
If the ones we always see in the game are "Phfor made," what were the real ones like?
Why *do* they dissappear when we kill them, or is that never really explained?
