In Response To: Want feedback on idea (Me!!)

: Well, slightly more than an idea actually. I've recently started work on a
: new game engine (For SDL/OpenGL) which is fundamentally very similar to
: Marathon (Conatains no AO code), to the extent that a scenario importer
: would be piss-easy to make. I would have made changes to Aleph One instead
: but some of the core code is incompatible with some features, eg.
: position-independant side portals. However the effort is probably worth
: it, because it would allow all sorts of crazy crap like never-ending
: hallways, also I'd like to add a lot of the things whose absence cause the
: Marathon engine to be considered, how should I put it, outdated.

: So let's have an opinion poll: if there was a (finished) engine that allowed
: you to import maps/scenarios directly into it, was modern in terms of
: graphical capabilities, more flexible than Marathon (esp. with double
: subtractions) and open source, but above all Marathon-like, would you use
: it in favour of Aleph One?

It comes down to two things can a map maker use the new features and can the people play on the engine. If map makers have a hell of a time using the 3-D it will be no different then now(the code is in the engine). Before you make an engine consult some programmers for making a map making tool. Plus you will scrap the Pfhore project.
A1 can be a big beast as is, will your engine run better? How much room will it take? How much ram? Many of us are running on older(a few years will do it) machines. I made a map that can only play in stronger machines in hope thta the future players will enjoy it. If you really want to make this engine go for it. But remember it may be a while before any one seriously uses it.
A1 took some time to catch on, don't be discouraged by low numbers.
