Right aye, here goes:

Here's the fast version -- the marine doesn't chage *at all* over the marathon trilogy. The marine exists at a point in the story and does what he does best, and changes the world around him... but the AIs make the decisions for you. Same with Halo, actually. He effectively has no will of his own.

The marine is a sword, not the hand weilding it.

In a film, however, your main character *must* have a will of their own, and *must* grow in some capacity between the beginning and end of the film, since that's the whole point of a story.

Stories have a beginning, middle, and end, but the immortal hero is, by his definition, timeless.

That's a swift butchery of a complex topic, but it's short enough to read ;)
