Even if it were unnecessary...?

A threat is only a threat as long as there is something around to be threatened.

I'm going to assume that there are some areas, at least, on Halo which would be protected. Again, as I've mentioned elsewhere, this is implied by 343GS comment about the MC viewing the research facilities 'later'. Obviously he can't if he is killed by Halo's pulse...

I'm very keen on seeing the Flood resurface again in Halo 2. Given that they appear to be the very reason for the Halos being constructed in the first place, they are integral to the story. It would be remiss of Bungie to not bring them back again at some point.
