Well, like the MC, he/she may not have been aware of what was being attempted until the last moment. I don't necessarily subscribe to a 'misled' theory though. As with the MC, 343GS may have just assumed that this 'reclaimer' knew what was involved and not mentioned it until asked. Kinda like: (Previous reclaimer and 343GS in Halo's Control Room) [Previous Reclaimer = PR] PR: "Hang on. What exactly are we going to do here?" 343GS: "Reclaimer. What do you ask such a question? Surely you know the answer." PR: "Please, humour me..." 343GS: [sighs] "As you wish... Activation of this installation will result in the proximity sterilisation of all planetary systems containing species compatible with the Flood's requirements for reproduction." PR: "Sterilisation...?" [pauses and thinks] "Compatible, how?" 343GS: "Reclaimer. We are wasting time." PR: "Please...?" 343GS: "Reclaimer. Your demands on such matters are quite distracting. But, if you insist... The Flood's requirements are quite specific. All species of sufficient biomass and cognitive ability are a - " PR: "Whoa! Hang on... You mean...sentient life-forms?" 343GS: "Well, yes. Of course." PR: "Like...me." 343GS: "Indeed, Reclaimer!" PR: [stunned] "God..." 343GS: "I'm sorry, Reclaimer. I'm not familiar with that specific designati - " PR: [serious concerned] "And there's no other way of stopping the Flood?" 343GS: "That is so. No alternative process has been found to be acceptably efficient in the circumstances." The PR thinks for a few moments, considering the awful magnitude of what is to be done. 343GS: "Reclaimer! There is no time. We must activate this installation." PR: "Would you do it?" 343GS: "I'm sorry, Reclaimer. Please rephrase your question." PR: "I mean...would you take this action? 343GS: "Of course, Reclaimer. It is the only way to be sure." PR: "There must be another way..." 343GS: "Reclaimer. I must have your assistance. Time is short!" PR: [almost pleading] "No... You cannot expect me to make that kind of decision and...and just arbitrarily wipe out potentially hundreds of species...just like that!" 343GS: [now patiently] "The Flood would not entertain similar concerns. And their threat is the greater." PR: [quietly] "...What is the range?" 343GS: "Twenty five thousand light years. Approximately..." The PR considers this, and, after some anguished moments, finally agrees. The PR and 343GS activate Halo...
A bit rushed (and flawed) and off the top of my head, admittedly. But hopefully it works momentarily... Mark | |
