In Response To: On the Subject of Hacking Halo (FrogBlast)
: This is in response to the news:
: Halo has, thankfully, been free from gameshark or hacking related tricks for
: well over a year now. The fact that gameshark hasn't been released for the
: xbox has allowed us to excercise our creativity in the game; working with
: the limits that Bungie gave us.
: Gameshark allows us to plug in a code, or a collection of codes, and alter
: the game. It allows us to dig up hidden features in the game. The
: alterations to the game might be "minor" and change features
: that could be changed without the aid of gameshark. For example, a player
: could enter a code and unlock all the levels. Major changes, on the other
: hand, could unlock features in the game that could never be found without
: the aid of a gameshark.
: My personal experience with gameshark is limited to the Nintendo 64 game
: "Goldeneye007." Gameshark could be used to unlock a hidden cheat
: 'Invisibility in multiplayer', and could be used to give the player the
: ability to walk through walls and fly through the air. Eventually,
: gameshark could be used to place a boat in the lake on the first level,
: and it could be used to locate entirely new and hidden levels or level
: names such as "Citadel."
: Before my Halo tricksterism, I spent a while messing with Goldeneye007. I had
: a site posted that reflected discoveries in a GE007 community on AOL. The
: site name was "Metafire's GoldenEye007 Page." It can still be
: found at: http://www.webarmor.com/metafire/spyder/mgold.html
: (As an aside; please keep in mind the site was created and maintained when I
: was a middle school and early high school student;).
: The GE007 trick scene was a fun place to be be, for a while. Then, Gameshark
: hacking really began to take the spotlight. While I was still involved
: with playing GE007; I found becoming myself more interested in number and
: letter combinations for gameshark.
: Unfortunately, I don't have very much to contribute when it comes to number
: and letter combinations;) So I moved on after playing around with the
: gameshark for a little while. Of course, the gameshark thing just got
: completely out of control, and some insane things became possible. Those
: codes, and a great collection of goldeneye tricks can be found at:
: So how do I feel about hacking games?
:
: I think anything that opens up new possibilities is good.
:
: I think discovery is good.
: I think uncovering a feature in Halo that allows you to bump into an enemy
: and become him is ultra cool.
: I am split on my feelings about hacking Halo. On one hand, the idea of
: finally getting to the bottom of T&R is pretty damn appealing. On the
: other hand, it is pretty damn cheap. The resulting view from the bottom of
: T&R would be just as double sided: cool... but cheap.
: I've really enjoyed brainstorming with everyone here at the HBO forum
: regarding tricks and exploration of the Halo world. I get a feeling that
: some of the desire to explore the unexplored will be lost when it becomes
: "explore the un-hack-explored... without using hacks." Why?
: Because we will have already been there and seen it. Hacking Halo for fun
: an profit will probably take something special away from the tricks and
: exploration scene. But, if you don't want to spend the next 50yrs of your
: life trying to magically turn yourself into a jackal, this is good news.
: *Please feel free to add your own thoughts, and/or corrections. It's early
: in the morning and my brain isn't stringing together completely coherent
: meaningful thoughts. Pictures from mace. btw... Yes, I know this is just a
: game;)*
Hmmmm,I dont know what to think.
We only had a couple areas left unexplored, maybe we coulda gotten to them, maybe not.But now, whats the point of trying. If we get to the bottom of the security shaft unaided by a hack, people wont be as impressed as they would have been before the hack.Thats half the fun, getting somewhere that most people would consider impossible to get to,or at least thought it impossible. Now anyone with a modded box can do it.
At least we all know who the real tricksters are in the Halo world.
As far as all the other stuff you can do,I kinda like the idea of taking control of another character in the game, shooting down covie dropships, and so on.
Tricks just wont have much meaning now.Really sucks in that sense.
