I never got an actual explanation on this one, but i always thought that it meant something like...the old king is dead, the status of kingliness has now passed immediately on to the crown prince (in your case, the Prince of Wales, i believe), though he may not be corronated for some time. Therefore may the prince, now king, live for a very long time. Or something to that effect. Giving you, "The [previous] king is dead. Long live the [new] king."
