In Response To: I never understood that saying... *NM* (Ross Mills) Well, you see, the saying is, originally, "The king is dead. Long live the king." The point, of course, is that as soon as one king is dead, another one (usually his son) takes his place, so that there is no period when there is no king. Incidentally, it goes to show you that being "king' is not an inherent quality but rather an effect of an unwritten (usually) social contract, but that's a whole other kettle of fish.
