Well assuming that flood could survive upon Halo for thousands of years uninterupted, wouldn't they be able to do the same on their original place of origin? There could be an entire planet full of flood spores, that are just waiting for something to visit them. I suggest that this homeworld wouldn't need food to evolve the spores, it's only when they come into contact with larger lifeforms do they become dangerous and need food to survive.

Also this day has turned into Flood Speculation Day...
