In Response To: Re: Halo 2 Trailer Dialogue (transcription) (Skeletor)
: I conjecture that there is more behind the Covenant's mission of destroying
: mankind than a simple "We kill every other species we come upon for
: no good reason" dogma.
: I've always believed that there is some truth behind their so-called
: "Gods", and that their scriptures put more importance on
: destroying humanity in particular, rather than just every other race they
: find. Perhaps many years ago the Covenant had contact with another species
: that they considered to be Gods, and a prophecy was foretold that humanity
: would one day stumble upon the Halo(s), somehow causing the destruction of
: the galaxy. Perhaps the Covenant were given the mission to protect the
: galaxy at all costs. Orson Scott Card (In Speaker for the Dead) said:
: "...But when it comes to human beings, the only type of cause that
: matters is final cause, the purpose. What a person had in mind. Once you
: understand what people really want, you can't hate them anymore. You can
: fear them, but you can't hate them, because you can always find the same
: desires in your own heart."
: I think, to some degree, this quote can be applied to the Covenant as well.
: If we only knew their final cause, if they would have only told us, I
: think that we may find that it is truly ourselves that are the bad guys.
mmmmh, philosophy. yummy.
