In Response To: Comments about movie-making... (long post) (Halo-Wannabe)

aiiiieee!.. people talking about me. :-)
thanks for the kind words folks.

here's what makes a halo video exciting to me (and i try to apply this to my creations as well):

  • brevity - anything over 3-4 minutes, i start to glaze over. if you have THAT MUCH material, save it for another video!
  • progression - if i randomly click on the timeline in your video and can't tell one scene from the other, then your video might be repetitous (ie. boring).

i like a video to have a beginning, middle, and an end. if you can randomly sample a scene in the vid and know what the scene following it is, then it's probably an interesting video.

  • content - it's hard to come up with new stunts, just ask Frogblast (uhh, nevermind). i'm even sick of launching warthogs, BUT if you do, consider using only the best clips. "warthog jump" is 2 hours of footage condensed into essentially 3 minutes. i left out some good launches, but in order to keep the vid flowing, i had to cut them -- which leads into:
  • pacing - start with a BANG, finish with a BANG. an exciting scene will help keep a person's interest during the slower moments, then finish with your best trick. leave your audience wanting more (right Louis?). they'll probably watch your video again to see if they missed anything.

ask yourself this question:
if somebody else made your vid, would it still entertain you?

if you have concerns about the replayability of your vid, don't release it right away. take a break and watch it a few days later. if you still like it, upload that puppy!

-r
(IMHO of course)
