I think that when GS said "some of : them survived to reproduce" i think he was talking about the flood. : They just took a sew of tehm and put them in a room and made them mate in : there to study. You have to consider that GS is built to prevent Flood outbreaks... why would he be so grateful that they're still around? There ARE possibilities (so he'll still have a job, he's scientifically fascinated by them, etc.) but they don't seem to fit well enough to me.
