In Response To: My Halo/GS/Forerunner theory (in FAQ format) *SP* (NthDegree256)

I'll take a stab at ya'.

: Q: What does Halo do?

: A: Halo eradicates all large, sentient life in the surrounding 25,000
: light-year radius. It does so in an unknown manner, but involves pulses.
: It does NOT eliminate life on itself. Halo preserves life on itself.

It also preserves the flood. Killing everything within 25,000 light years was a secondary function necessary for containing the flood.

: Q: How many Halos are there?

: A: At least 4 and possibly more than 10

Do you have a source for this information?

: Q: Why was Halo designed to eliminate the Flood's food and not the Flood
: itself?

: A: The Flood spread so quickly and so numerously that a wide-scale attack
: would be the ONLY way to eliminate them, and even then numerous pockets
: could survive. A single Infection form would be enough to ensure the
: Flood's reproduction - thus, the safest way to ensure that they are
: finished is to remove anything to reproduce with.

I don't think that it would even require a single infection form. I heard somewhere that the flood operates at its lowest form as a spore. I couldn't tell you where I heard that however. I think the main reason why the flood would survive the pulse is because their lowest form IS the spore, which is probably nearly indestructible, and possibly the reason why Covenant Elites can be infected even with their sheilds on.

: Q: Has Halo been activated in the past?

: A: Yes. GS's statements verify this ("Why would you hesitate to do
: something you have already done?", etc.)

: Q: Why would the Forerunners activate Halo? Wouldn't this doom their race as
: well?

: A: While Halo would eradicate most of their race, the Forerunners themselves
: would remain living... by staying ON Halo! Halo acts as a sort of
: "Noah's Ark", preserving samples of life to reseed the galaxy
: after the total elimination. GS does say how grateful he is that
: "some of them survived to reproduce", and I don't think he was
: talking about the Flood there. :-)

I don't think there is any guarantee that stuff on the Halo would live, asides from flood. When MC unites the index with the core, Cortana keeps the pulses from occuring. 343GS says something to the effect of, 'that wasn't supposed to happen.' My personal opinion of why he says this concerns his amazement that the MC didn't drop dead on the spot.

: Q: Why is there a Library on Halo?

: A: Apart from preserving life, Halo is also used to preserve knowledge. The
: Library provides that function.

And to hold the index. We wouldn't want to forget that.

: Q: Why are there varying climates on Halo?

: A: To accomodate varying species that would be taking up residence there.

: Q: Why was Halo "necessary" for the Flood's survival as a species?
: Why would the Forerunners care?

: A: Guilty Spark is NOT referring to the Flood in that statement - he is
: referring to the Forerunners. Remember, GS is constantly talking as if you
: already know what he's talking about - therefore, he doesn't bother
: clarifying.

This is an ambiguous topic. There is no way to verify that GS was talking about the Forerunners.

: Q: Why did the Forerunners preserve the Flood on Halo? Wouldn't they want to
: wipe them out permanently?

: A: The Flood were preserved for the same reason we preserver smallpox
: specimens - to study them in case something happens and another outbreak
: occurs. Halo was built as a last-ditch effort - the Forerunners would like
: to find another way, which is why they were kept for study.

Another way to do what?

: Q: Were the Forerunners robots? AI?

: A: No. Guilty Spark requires YOU, an organic being, to retrieve the Index for
: him. He then takes it from you because he knows that you are organic and
: susceptible to infection. Guilty Spark seems to think you are a
: Forerunner, doesn't he?
: It's possible GS may have known you are not a Forerunner, leaving the floor
: open for the organic/inorganic debate. However, the Forerunners were
: obviously concerned about the Flood, and GS says that Halo was
: "necessary for their survival as a species." I think it's most
: likely that the Forerunners were organic in nature.

It was the Marathon Marine dammit! j/k
