Ah. Weapon redundancy. | |

In Response To: Halo 4 complaint (sort of): weapons (Jabberwok) : Assault rifle : assault rifle, storm rifle, suppressor, SAW : sniper rifle: sniper rifle, beam rifle, binary rifle : rocket launcher: rocket launcher, fuel rod cannon, incinerator : pistol: pistol, DMR, battle rifle, light rifle, carbine, boltshot (this one : is fairly different, but pretty similar to a couple other weapons as well) : shotgun: shotgun, scattershot I agree that there's way too much redundancy in Halo 4. Had I been the one calling the shots, here's how I'd do the alien weapons. First off, for the Covenant I would have brought back the focus rifle and needle rifle. The focus rifle's continuous beam makes it more distinct from the sniper rifle than the beam rifle is, plus in terms of fiction it made sense as it was derived from the Sentinel beam. The only thing it needed was a power buff, as it felt underpowered in Reach. The Needle rifle likewise had more to distinguish itself from the DMR than the Carbine does. Functionally, the Carbine is simply a purple alien DMR that shoots green bullets and has slight differences in ROF, accuracy, and damage. It's about as distinct from the DMR as the M4A1 and AK-47 are from each other in Modern Warfare. But the needle rifle's ability to supercombine in targets did more to make that weapon more distinct. As for the Promethean arsenal, I would have scrapped the light rifle and scattershot completely, as there's no reason for them to exist and there's no way to retool them to make them more distinctive. Furthermore, the remaining weapons would be battery-powered to give them continuity between themselves and the Covenant's plasma weapons, which are based on Forerunner tech. The suppressor would be retooled as a beam weapon similar to the Sentinel beam. The binary rifle would overheat after a single shot (and to compensate I might remove the laser sight that gives the shooter away) and would have a battery life of five shots, plus or minus one shot. Since it's already single-shot and has a reload animation that looks more like it's overheating/charging up, plus its shots fragment into smaller munitions that randomly bounce away from the point of detonation which gives it enough distinction from the rocket launcher, the incinerator wouldn't need to change functionally, and all that would need to change would be the HUD widget to reflect its nature as a battery-powered weapon. As for the boltshot, being a weird mishmash of a magnum, plasma pistol, and shotgun, it may or may not be redundant enough to keep. I'd probably lean towards keeping it, but for MP I'd have made it a low-tier ordnance weapon like the Needler and concussion rifle are. Finally, the stasis rifle that was deleted would have been kept, and it would have been a low-tier ordnance weapon as well.
