In Response To: Re: My H4 review - Campaign (Gameplay and Story) (stabbim) : I'll agree with the general sentiment that the added animation for : button-pressing isn't an improvement. If given the choice, I'd opt to go : back to the old way. But on the other hand, I also agree with Bry in that : it didn't really bother me. : This is actually my feeling on a lot of the complaints I've heard about Halo
Right, and IMO that's the proper position to be in. If we enjoyed something, we shouldn't say that people who didn't enjoy it "need to lighten up" or anything, just as if we didn't enjoy something then the people who did are perpetuating some kind of bad design. People like and dislike different things. The creators decide who to listen to, if at all, when deciding how to create and/or improve on future creative awesomeness. It's their game, not ours. We claim it ours because we love it. If they take it somewhere we don't like, we can choose not to follow. Heck if they take it somewhere we absolutely love, we can still choose not to follow :P My beef is not with people who dislike QTEs or button pushing animations or what have you - it's with people holding opinions that imply a general Goodness or Badness about certain elements, that somehow their opinion is more "valid" than another. Every design decision has two branches - supporters and critics. The creators decide for themselves what they feel was "good design" or "bad design" in the context of future development based on their weighing of fans' input (they also decide whether to put more credence on quantity or quality of feedback; vocal minority or majority opinion) Obviously they could be weighted more like a limb and a twig, in which case public opinion has a much greater effect on acceptance and future creations, but in the horses that are endlessly beaten in this forum and repeated debates, it really seems more like a branch and a twig, or maybe a couple of twigs on the Halo tree, in the grand scheme of things (and lots of people just watching the twigs grow). Let's not try to break the other twig off the trunk. Also, yay metaphors =P
