In Response To: Re: My H4 review - Campaign (Gameplay and Story) (Rockslider) : You like The Library too? Hurrah, there are at least two of us! You mean three. *points to self* Back to the subject at hand, even if we admit that button pushes pulling us out of gameplay is a "minor" thing, there is the issue of precedent-setting. There's a trend in the industry of making video games more like interactive movies than electronic games. In other words, they're making things more cinematic, but sometimes at the expense of gameplay. The aforementioned animated button pushes in H4 (as well as that instance where a knight knocks you down a gets all up in your grill with his skull face) is a prime example. This opens the door for further instances of the devs yanking us out of gameplay to do something "cool" and cinematic. Even QTEs fall into a related category; though the player is technically doing something, it's really just a simple Simon-like minigame that's meant to give the player the illusion of control while at the same time crafting a more "cinematic" experience. The fact that it totally clashes with the established game mechanics apparently doesn't register with the devs, who want to make "art" even if it comes at the expense of gameplay. The Didact either should have been a proper boss battle instead of a QTE, or that whole fight should have been relegated to a cutscene. It's best to air our grievances out now in the hopes of avoiding these things in future games than remain quiet and guarantee that the devs, sure in their beliefs that everybody likes these things, will implement them in ever more obtrusive ways in future games.
