In Response To: Visualizing the Halo Universe: Round 4 (Postmortem) Well, here they are folks. Two amazing Precursors, definitely unique, different from anything we've seen before, and both as faithful to the descriptions from the books. TDSpiral's Precursor:
Hedgemony's Precursor:
The Winner:
Accuracies: Sea-scorpion appearance.
Inaccuracies: Lacking humanoid form. Artistic License: Lower, snail-like body reminiscent of Engineers.
My Thoughts: Personally, I would have loved to see the lower portion developed more, so that it adheres more to the "humanoid" form described in the books. However, this thing is just damn creepy. The segmented body, and the way its entire form leads into the massive hands, just works wonderfully to capture the alien feeling of the Precursor... solidifying it as a creature from the black depths of time itself, something alien even to the galactic realms of Halo's fiction.
If I am to assume that these were indeed used as references for Hedge's Precursor, then the eeriness of those invertebrates transfers over wonderfully into the model that he created. And even if these were not used as references, I think you would be hard-pressed to find someone to say that the similarities do not work to enhance this guy. The way the segmented body coils around its lower portion is without a doubt my favorite part. I would say the head, but it's just too creepy to say that I like it. I also can't help but be reminded of these critters, which is probably good given their respective place in their fictional universe:
Yes, I watched the third movie, and yes... I liked it. :P TDSpiral Accuracies: Sea-scorpion appearance.
Inaccuracies: Width.
Artistic License: Flood-like colorations from the zombie models in Flood mode.
My Thoughts: One of the things I found odd about both Hedge and TDSpiral's design for the lower body is that both lacked a well defined set of legs, opting instead for a large mass with smaller appendages sprouting off of it. In the novels, the Precursor is described as having large legs curled up like a spider, which immediately makes me think of these guys:
However, both depictions fit the description of having a lower body that is "grossly fat". - - - And that's it for this week. Congratulations to the winner, who will be receiving their avatar code to do with as they please shortly. We'll be taking a break for a week, and then this coming Sunday you can check back in for the next subject! Thanks to the two who participated!
