He clearly gets pretty upset throughout the story whenever Cortana shows signs of rampancy, even though he reacts pretty silently, just like always. But at the end, when he has to confront the fact that he failed to get Cortana home, that's also the first time we see him emote like that ("No... that's not -- we go together.") This is, as far as I can tell, the first time that the Chief has actually failed in a situation under his control. Like I speculated on last year, we're finally getting to see the Chief not knowing what to do and that forces him to react differently than he ever has. A traumatic event changing elements of a character's personality? Not at all poor storytelling in my book. What would have been fucking terrible is if Cortana's sacrifice had not changed him at all (that is, if he was still upset but calm and silent). THAT would be bad storytelling. Pretty much for the entirety of Halo 4, including multiplayer and SpOps and everything else, the only thing that has had a lasting impression on me, if a few weeks can be called "lasting," is the Chief's development. Aside from that, Halo 4's been among the most average games I've ever played. The Chief/Cortana stuff gives me hope that somewhere deep in 343, they know that there's more to a story than technobabble and the threat of the end of the world.
