This discussion keeps going back to a hypothetical casual gamer and what he could or could not understand. But does this person legitimately care? He probably doesn't remember how Halo 3 ended, or that when we last saw the Covenant it had disbanded. He just sees the same sort of bad guys he remembered shooting from previous games and continues to shoot them. At least until he gets bored after two levels and switches to multiplayer, then trades the game in for Black Ops 2 a week later.

Perhaps this was the audience 343 was aiming for with their (lack of) explanation?
