However, I disagree with the idea that the Chief talking to himself was a bad thing. I really liked it. He's never been introspective before. Having him just react silently would be what he always does. I see this as character progression. In any other context, you'd probably be right about it being overly expository or something. But for the Chief, who pretty much only talks if he has to, saying something like that (and to nobody but himself) is a big step in an interesting direction.
