I don't really see the point of separating plot from story like this. Anybody can see a sequence of events happening in a game or movie, but if there are missing key elements in those sequences, what you do understand in isolation becomes meaningless and confusing when brought intto the whole.

For example:

"A guy walks down a hallway and opens the door at the end." Okay, that makes sense. "He was so sad for what he saw inside." Uhhh, okay, I know what being sad means...

If plot is just being able to read those two things and understanding what the words mean in a elementary sense, then who cares?

...But wait, why is he so sad? It's lacking the emotional impact not just because of "story", but because the plot didn't inform us of all the relevant points in this sequence of events. Because somebody forgot to write down "John arrived at the morgue" before those lines.

So using this perspective on Halo 4's plot...

When I left Halo 3, I knew these things: the Covenant had been split up. The Sangheili had discovered the lies of the Prophets and turned against them, staying true to their honor and abandoning their old gods. I also knew from the monitors, ruins, and terminals of the Forerunners that this long-dead race were a compassionate, god-like species that when all other plans failed, sacrificed their lives to protect all life in the Milky Way.

Now, jump to Halo 4 and the Covenant (Sangheili included) are back to being an evil alien race trying to kill everyone and now there's also a Forerunner that somehow survived the activation of the rings who wants to kill all humans.

I understand what these plot points mean on their own - but they make no sense in relation with each other. So, I find the plot confusing.
