We asked Frankie at PAX why there are hammers in the campaign. His answer was basically that there was no real reason, besides the fact that they wanted to include the hammer for Grifball and thought it would be fun to use in the campaign. I expect the hammer will appear in some sort of Covie weapon cache in the campaign, with no sighting or mention of Brutes at all.
