In Response To: Re: Forward unto Dawn episode 2 - out now (Grizzlei) : I've always seen the Kobayashi Maru test to be a sign of Starfleet's : incompetence as an effective fighting force. However, the test as a whole merely : promotes how to lead people in an impossible scenario and doesn't seem to : encourage eccentric, "out of the box" tactics that James Kirk : used. : Though he cheated, Kirk still demonstrated his skills as a tactician and
Isn't that what I said? The Kobayashi Maru test isn't just about how you handle the scenario, but how you handle taking the test. Kirk displayed both sound tactical thinking in the scenario as well as brilliant strategic thinking by exploiting the test system itself. I wonder if the FUD writers are drawing a deliberate comparison to Kirk and the Kobayashi Maru. They're a bunch of nerds like us, after all. : You have to presume that the Innies utilize the same technologies as you do [Politically-charged statement alert.] Isn't that how America lost the Vietnam War? Assuming the enemy will operate by the same rules you do is not how to win a war. Many of history's most important and decisive battles we were by doing something new and different. That is, in fact, the very lesson they learned in this episode. Zuma Squad was (presumably) performing exactly as the UNSC drill instructors taught them to, which is exactly the UNSC's problem. Trying to fight a guerrilla force that knows how to exploit your weaknesses doesn't work unless you're willing to think outside the box, which Laskey does.
