In Response To: Indy LAN write up (SUPER LONG) *img *vid (Revenant1988)

: We arrived in Indianapolis shortly afterwards, and then to Bone’s place. We
: had a bit of trouble finding it at first. Apparently, the complex was laid
: out in a system like this: buildings are arranged in an order down the
: street from 1-10. We need to be in building number 5. Oh wait, some
: jackass decided that #5 needs to be on the other side of the street next
: to nothing, for no raisin!

Fry squinting

: I can’t wait to not find it!

: So as Padraig began to zip between trees in a ninja-brute like manner (my
: only regret is not getting pictures or video of this)

I bet, it sounds funny.

: looking for the right building, I called Bones to ask. When I described our
: predicament, here’s how the conversation went:

: Me: Bone’s we can’t find your place #5. The addresses go 1-2-3-4-6-7-8 its bullshit

: Bones: goddamnit Revenant, didn’t you look at the map and directions I sent you?

I can totally imagine it, I've gotten the same response plenty of times when I've played with him, I was waiting for it the whole.

: We all gathered at the theater and found seats; the showing was packed.

a tidbit you might not know: after driving across half a state and a significant portion of another and getting held up in traffic that stopped dead several times, my group managed to get lost on the way to the theater, and probably drive by it at least once, while having virtually no gas

: When we got back Bones had Lunch waiting for everyone. Before we would begin
: to play though, I had a treat to share with everyone in the form of a long
: ago promised HBO montage. Unnh was kind enough to loan his laptop to my
: projector and we gathered people around, music cranked up high. I was
: unbelievably nervous about showing it off- it was the first montage I’ve
: ever made and I just wanted it to be good. My nervousness subsided however
: when the room erupted into laughter after the first few clips. If you
: didn’t get to see it in my post a few weeks ago, here it is again for your
: viewing pleasure

Honestly, I didn't know what was so funny most of the time, I thought most of it was just kind of amusing and about average or a little above average (and one or two spots below average), of course I didn't say anything because I didn't want to be that guy.

: And then we got going for some HALO, finally!
: We started out with Reach and worked our way backwards down to Combat Evolved
: (a terrible idea, in hindsight, more on that later).

yeah, it was...

: Oh you want to drive Meeka around do you? Well, my friend Mr. Blast-y
: disagrees!

I didn't know what that was from until just now. (I think I'm right at that age, just old enough, that I was introduced to the Internet late enough I'll periodically forget Google exists for the rest of my life. Does anybody else have this happen to them? You've been wondering about something and you're about to ask and you realize you can just Google it?)

: I always wanted to meet Louis Wu

This and the Ibeechu comment bring up a minor thing: a few people had funny nametags, more than one each even.

: So we had enough to do 16 players, and the first game we set out to play was
: CTF on Sidewinder. That meant 4 xboxs, 4 player split screen. It was the
: laggiest hot mess that I’ve played in recent memory. Don’t get me wrong, I
: loved it back in the day, and I still love it now (for what it was) but it
: was pretty clear that sometimes, nostalgia clouds your judgment and
: memories. I’m sure someone will point out that we were using 360’s and it
: probably would have played better on the original xbox in a LAN but well
: we didn’t, so we made the best with what we had. Frame rate was terrible,
: the game physically stopped and froze twice on prisoner when everyone
: tossed a grenade at the same time, and it was just really spotty. I’m
: happy with the Halo’s we have now, and nothing will ever touch the
: campaign of Combat Evolved but the MP is not the perfect thing that
: everyone remembers it being, I PROMISE. It was fun yes, but only because I
: had HBOers with me. I’m glad Halo has evolved the way it has, for me, its
: only gotten better.

I agree, but it would help your stance if you give a reason not related to the game being broken with 16 people on 4 boxes that it wasn't designed for.

: Before we left, Korny gathered us all for a quick group photo. Then
: BlueRunner said, “I wish Snipe here” and we all got sad…

What happened here is someone (CaneCutter I think) said I should hold my arm out like that so they could shop Snipe in, and we took a group picture, then we took another one and someone said we should act sad. I wasn't sure if that was a serious comment or not or if anyone would actually do it, and no one told I could or should stop my pose, so I held it.

: I think the last thing I remember participating in was a conversation about
: the nature of the Flood and how we might see them in one way or another in
: Halo 4 with Levi, Postmortem, and GV. After that, sleeps.

If only I could remember anything we said. I do remember I got Leviathan to sign my HBO shirt though, well, monogram it.

: I stood in the doorway, spun around a few times so everyone could see and
: someone turn off the lights so my armor’s lights might show better.
: GV being the purist that he is, took one look at me and said “Why are the
: lights purple? Spartans don’t have purple lights” to which Bones replied
: “Because they’re fucking cool Vagueness” and we all just laughed.

I'm pretty sure I didn't say "Spartans don’t have purple lights", and I probably wouldn't have asked if I agreed they were cool-- the rest of I do agree was cool, though.

: And the group shot

I've noticed some things here: firstly, it looks like a caveman stumbled into our LAN party...

unnh
I mean with a face like that, and a name like that, what else could he be?

and secondly,

Leviathan
Leviathan sure hopes you guys don't do this

: If you haven’t played L4D2 in a LAN setting, you are missing out on some
: great fun. Bones even got his siblings to participate in a few games, to
: which they quickly kicked my teams collective asses. Lol I don’t think
: that Six, Unnh, Ibeechu and I had any strategy other than “run like hell”
: and it showed. Padraig and Bone’s sister in particular took great joy in
: ripping our faces off as the infected.

They were in a few games of Reach that we played too.

: As the night began to wind down, Bones ordered some more pizza and we started
: to clean up a few things. Meanwhile, P-Kay and GV played through the
: ENTIRE H:CEA campaign, finding all the Easter eggs along the way while
: Kermit and Levi also gave CE a spin, but NOT CEA:

He actually played the first two levels, then we had lunch, then I joined him for the rest of the game. We didn't go looking for easter eggs, at least I didn't because I'm still going through Halo Anniversary with the new graphics (yes, still), and I think he only got a few things. The unfortunate cable incident was already mentioned, so I don't need to mention it again.

: After a quick shower and one last donut, Jennos and I discussed all the fun
: we had with the LAN, and some costume related things while the zombies
: downstairs began to awake. We all gathered around, said our goodbyes and
: then Team MK V walked out into the morning mist to disappear into the corn
: fields from whence we came.

: Ok, so we really just got in my truck and drove off but it was still pretty
: dramatic.

another tidbit: people gradually left and my group was one of the last to go, and AFAIK the only one to come back, because Six min Whistle forgot something

: I had a great time playing with everyone and an even greater time meeting
: everyone. Being able to put faces to names was great, and I truly had a
: wonderful weekend. I’d like to give a shout out to Bones for taking the
: time to organize the event, and for bending over backwards to make sure
: everyone was happy and taken care of. You really busted your ass sir, and
: I hope you had as much fun as I did. Hopefully we do another one of these
: soon!
