Two obvious reasons (I'm sure there are more non-obvious ones):

- less content to distribute at any one time
- keeps people interested in the title for a longer stretch of time

So here's a question for you:

Let's say a developer released a title on multiple platforms, and the title was episodic. And the developer said "we're not going to charge you for the download itself - if, for example, you buy the title on PS3, you can grab the content for free, because Sony doesn't charge a fee to use the network, but if you buy it on Xbox, you need a Gold account, because Microsoft requires that in order to offer you episodic downloads."

You don't have a PS3, though; you bought an Xbox, and you don't have time/money for multiple consoles. (I have no idea if you, Cody, have a PS3 - this 'you' is a general you. This is a hypothetical.)

Now, in order to get the content, you are forced to pay an additional fee for Xbox LIVE... because of choices you made in your past. But the developer has already said that if you choose a platform (PC would have free downloads, too, I guess) that ALLOWS it, they're perfectly fine with you not paying more than the cost of the game to get the game. THEY'VE GIVEN YOU THE CHOICE, AND YOU'VE PICKED XBOX BECAUSE THAT'S WHAT YOU OWN. Would you still feel cheated that you have to pay extra to get the game? If so... would you feel cheated by the DEVELOPER, or the middleman (Microsoft) that is demanding a cut because you're using their platform?

My guess, from reading this thread, is that you'd feel cheated, and you'd feel cheated by the developer; that you think it's their responsibility to find a way to get YOU the content for free, on the platform of your choice.

And if I'm right, this is where you and I will NEVER be able to agree. :(
