Um... what? I really don't think the purpose of this is to sell gold subscriptions. I'm amazed that that's where your brain went.

David Ellis (who's on the team developing this) says it's way more fun with coop partners - it was DESIGNED for coop partners. Yes, you can play it by yourself - but they built it to be played with others. They even built it to be played with RANDOM others, if you don't have friends that are interested.

More and more games are going this way - being optimized for online play, of one sort or another. (Even if it's just downloading the content, they consider that 'online play', and the silver/gold break here is Microsoft, not 343 - the break is because downloading large amounts of non-demo content is part of the gold model.) It's the way the gaming world is going, and if you hate the idea of playing online, you're going to have a smaller and smaller selection of games to choose from. (There are certainly other platforms that offer no-additional-cost downloads, at least now... but you have to pay for the internet connection in any case. I'm surprised that wasn't part of your rant at the start. Shit - you have to pay the electric company if you want to run the console in the FIRST place!)

Eh. Whatever. Don't buy it if you don't want it. I would have bought Halo 4 WITHOUT Spartan Ops - and I have the disk space and Gold subscription to support it with no additional cost to myself, so for me, it's a total freebie. I'm sorry it's not for you.
