: but if you can't deny the
: purpose of this is to sell gold subscriptions.

Of course you can. I doubt there is a huge demographic out there who is seeing Spartan Ops and going "oh boy I really want to play that" that doesn't already have xbox live, or is avoiding XBL altogether. It's a product, you don't have to buy it. Find a 2 day card. Sheesh.

Halo isn't Microsoft's only source of revenue for xbox live (it is a big one sure) and its pretty foolish to say otherwise.

: I am totally okay with online multiplayer requiring a gold subscription -
: after all the only way to play online multiplayer is online . But what
: you are looking at here is the beginning of something pretty sinister for
: games.

: Again, this is about selling Gold subscriptions, as well as keeping you from
: owning the game in its entirety or buying used. I would be pleasantly
: surprised if Spartan Ops were free for EVERYONE, and not just those that
: get a one time use code with their new purchase.

When I bought Halo 2 I didn't have XBL. I didn't feel like I was being cheated out of a game by not being able to play the online 1/2 of the disc. I bought it knowing full well that I wouldn't be able to partake in that feature (I didn't get XBL until a little after Halo 3 came out). There were a lot of games like that at that time for me. It was what it was. So, you are not being robbed by not being able to play SpOps if you don't get xbl. They say it's like getting 2 campaigns for the price of 1. You paid for the 1, and you are guaranteed the 1. The 2nd, you have to have the tools to redeem it. If you do great, if you don't you aren't out anything. It's the equivalent of a 2 for one sale, and you don't take the free one because you can't use it.

: I think my entire concern would be mitigated by a disc release of Spartan
: Ops. I'd even wait until after it runs its course and all the seasons are
: done, and pay for a disc. If the missions are worth the asking price, then
: I think everybody wins there.

I've posted about this before, and I'll say it again: Probably not gonna happen, there's not enough of you for it to make business sense. When they did it for the Halo2 maps that was pretty cool but at that point in time online console play was not as big as it is now. Online is pretty standard, it is common at this time. YES, there are people out there in the U.S still that don't have broad band or the means to play online, but eventually they will. It just takes time. For now, there isn't much you can say to them other than "Yeah....that sucks".

: I doubt that's going to happen though, because then it would be possible to
: buy all the content used, and there is a huge war on used sales in the
: games industry that does nothing to make the player's experience any
: better.

I just bought Arkham City GotY and got all that DCL for "free" and it was a good deal. That game isn't a great comparison thought since it is 95% single player focused but I don't see any problems with it. Halo, GoW, CoD are all popular games with popular online components. There is demand to play them. Since there is demand to play them the price stays higher a little longer, the content isn't made "free" 6 months after its released because the games aren't shit. New people still come to play them. New people are willing to pay.

: I'm all for giving people the option to buy digitally, so long as a physical
: copy is always available. If someone works out a digital distribution
: system that functions exactly like a real disc (I can lend it, sell it,
: play it on whatever console I want, etc) then we can ditch physical media.

: But we are moving toward a system where you are losing control over what you
: buy, and the sad part is people are seeing this as a good thing. Stockholm
: Syndrome.

: Again, if there are plans for a disc release, not unlike the Halo 2 map pack,
: then all of my fears and concerns will totally vanish.

Hey, they might release a disk for this stuff, once Spartan Ops is DONE. Finished, as in, no new episodes to be released. And that could happen, SpOps could be a flop. Or, it could be really popular and keep going for a long time. Guess which one is better for you?

: You are totally right; perhaps I'm not the target market. That seems to be
: happening more and more these days…

I guess it all comes down to how patient you are or are willing to be to access this content. If you want to access it now like everyone else, well, you have to go with the flow. Sorry.

If you don't mind waiting, then you can reap the rewards of saving some money by not needing to play upfront. I did that for Arkham City, I waited a year and got the game and the DLC at the cost of trying to remain in the dark about the story for a year.

It's a gamble you take man. I did the same thing with the map packs for Halo 3. I waited and got the first one free, I tried to wait for the next one but couldn't stand not playing with my friends that DID buy the maps. So, when ODST came out I essentially paid for a couple of map packs twice. Oh Well. I value the good times I had playing them with my friends more than the $15 it cost me.

Here's the deal Cody, Wu is right, you are not the target audience. You are a niche market. A product of an earlier period, a relic that doesn't like change.

And I'm not saying that the direction the online and/or gaming market is heading is good (I agree with you on some points), I think in a few years gamers our age will tell the younger kids that aren't playing yet "back in my day, or the good old days" etc and stuff like that.

I gotta say: When Mig and Wu sometimes reply to GV with images of Eeyore because of his attitude
I often wonder why they don't do the same for you. You seem to fit that much better IMO.

As Wu pointed out, with a little work on your part you can still get the content for nothing, if you do a little leg work. I think you just like to complain. I really do.
