Cody, I think some your frustration is legitimate. If you're an offline gamer in an online gaming world, you're in the oft-overlooked minority who doesn't get the bells and whistles. Microsoft is playing to its majority, and doing everything it can to get you to pay for that Gold account (after all, the console was a loss-leader, and you only buy accessories once... well, once-ish).

As has already been pointed out, the disc is a space-limiting factor (I believe Cliff B. was calling this out with GoW2 somewhat publicly, having to cut basically a whole level from the game and add it back as DLC). The disc format was recently re-engineered (I participated in that beta), but that was only a modest chunk of space recovered. As production value increases, the length of a campaign is going to necessarily decrease, just to fit on the disc. You could do the two-disc thing, but that presents all sorts of other problems. The solution of moving expanded content to online services will unfortunately alienate some people (Gold isn't cheap - I get a lot of value out of my subscription, but others will see it differently). But it's good business for Microsoft. They get to sell you a game and a service, and they take a cut on the content.

What I don't see people arguing is why the games should still cost $60 when it's clear how much time and effort goes into making them more awesome (in response to our demands, I might add). We need to be careful not to ask for more without being willing to pay for more.
