Perhaps that's the problem - not so much HOW the developers are implementing 'push's but WHY. : I am not disagreeing with your premise at all - just where that push is most
I think the push can come from many places. Perhaps some designers should be implementing these pushes in better ways - ways that introduce you to different playstyles and game dynamics without forcing you to use them. Subtlety and all that. The whole "the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn't exist." Or perhaps the Futurama version is better: "When you do things right, people won't be sure you've done anything at all."
