Of course that's true, but if you like a game and you engage with other people about it socially, be that in real life or in online communities, then you will get people who will push you to try new things. This is the better way to do it, since increasingly the developers have their own agendas when it comes to why they steer players a certain way. Other people who love the game have only one agenda: fun. I am not disagreeing with your premise at all - just where that push is most beneficial in coming from.
