In Response To: Re: Im sorry friend but I disagree, it did (Louis Wu) : Seriously? Several people have already explained how they bring back memories : of earlier helmets in their lives - and thebruce has said more than once : that your opinion is totally valid, just not shared by him. And you're : STILL going to sit there and say that the whole thing is bullshit? So that : if you disagree, and can't come up with a reason beyond "it evokes : exactly what it's supposed to evoke for me, and therefore increases my : enjoyment of the game", your opinion is worthless? I was seeking to know if there was any other reason than that - the answer seems to be 'no.' I was asking for information and perspective I genuinely didn't have. I recognise the design intention, I recognise that it does evoke being inside a helmet - I reject the idea that, in actuality, it helps people become properly immersed (for a range of reasons, some I have touched on, and others I will try to explain in a post tomorrow (too late tonight)). From my perspective it may even actively reduce immersion - for example: you've noticed it, you are thinking about how it looks like the inside of a helmet, you are not just thinking about where that next bad guy is. As someone who plays a lot campaign to a very high level, I do not (and would not when playing) appreciate the reduction and obstruction of my visibility - even if I could ignore it. I can understand that people might think this is a worthwhile trade-off for the perceived increase in 'immersion' but that explicitly acknowledges that it is inherently negative to put things in the way of your view of the world. When 343i have said that Spartan IVs and MC play pretty much the same, I do not appreciate them being treated with different HUDs - it is inconsistent. The trade-off between visibility and perceived immersion speed (whatever) is different in multiplayer then? The inconsistency would seem to be jarring and reduce initial immersion for Infinity. If players don't notice the loss in this immersive element - did it really add much to begin with in the campaign? Or if the reason they don't notice a loss of immersion is because multiplayer is more inherently immersive the question should be asked: WHY? And steps should be taken to alter campaign with that in mind rather than introducing something that is not wholly positive. : C'mon. You don't like it - we get that. (Hell, you HATE it.) Some of us
I'm not - I'm trying to find sufficient justification for 343i's design that gels with my own rationality. Which I can not. It simply doesn't bother some people - I get that, please continue. But for the people that positively liked it - I wanted to know if there is any additional positives to it that could help balance a trade off that I see as massively weighed towards the negative. As I said, tomorrow I'll make a post outlining my view of that imbalance more thoroughly. Maybe it'll help discussion on this forum / clarify feedback for 343i, maybe it won't - in the end I'll still enjoy explaining, justifying and clarifying my own position because I think that challenge only makes it stronger :P I recognise that my tone may need additional work - which I will endeavour to continually review. :)
