OK, for one, I didn't notice the black areas looked like parts of the helmet in the right light, but that doesn't really help. Yes, in fact, I didn't notice the black areas at first, although I did notice them the last time screenshots came out.
The thing with the blue haze is that it doesn't just change the color of whatever's behind it, for a lot of the area it covers it also changes the apparent brightness, since it's not all the same tint of blue. It also looks, well, fuzzy, and it seems like it would make certain areas look blurry.
To help illustrate my point, I borrowed a picture from RC Master:

The solid red areas-- you'll note it's not just the bottom corners, it's also in the middle at the top and bottom-- are completely blocked, and the areas with red diagonal lines across them are obscured by the HUD. (The other red lines indicate things about the HUD that don't seem useful at this point, personally I don't really mind them.)
I also found a bigger version that shows another oddity I hadn't noticed and was more noticeable in previous screenshots: what's with the weird lines on the motion tracker?
That picture also shows something I think is more funny than complaint-worthy, if only because I assume all the text in the game will be proofread: the HUD has two misspellings in it, "sheild" near the top and "fillament" near the bottom.
When I wrote my original post, I had been off one of my meds from about 10 days before, until about 3 hours before, because of a change in state regulations, which made me tired and probably had other effects. I'm not excusing or taking back what I said, I stand by it; I'm saying if it came off weird and kind of harsh, that might be one of the reasons.
While I was looking for the post above, I stumbled on another issue I'd had, what ever happened with this (i.e., does it use the headset, and does it work)?
