In Response To: Re: Im sorry friend but I disagree, it did (thebruce0) : I said I'd rather like to try a HUD like Halo 4's with an RTS like Starcraft, : so the entire screen can be used more effectively within the game. : I also said that HUD style is "You know...a matter of preference."
As someone who's never played SC2, I have to ask: if you double-click to select all units of a certain type, will it still select units on the part of the screen covered by the 'HUD'? The original did that, and I always found that frustrating—I'm selecting things I can't see, that in my mind aren't on the 'screen', and am therefore not including them in the units I'm aware of and selecting from. There is an active part of the world obscured by the informational display. Other than that, Starcraft's display is clear and uncluttered. Yes, there is some visual flavor that only serves to remind you what race you're playing as, which is strictly unnecessary (and I usually ignore the unit portraits as well), but it doesn't bleed into the world or half-heartedly display meaningless, unreadable text and random lines. It's clear what is information and what isn't. Everything that's part of the display is on the bottom third of the screen. In terms of immersion, Halo 3 had lines that suggested the physical pattern visible on MC's visor (what's that for, anyway?), but that's it: nothing else but guns, ammo, grenades, shields, motion tracker, and equipment. Enough so that you knew you were inside that Mark VI helmet and no more. As much as I love the helmet interior from the Metroid Prime games, I never liked the unnecessary lines connecting the HUD elements, and even then there was an opacity slider for that, to make them disappear at your pleasure.
