They don't put random things over the view of the map that are purely for style - they don't try and make you feel like you're in some sort of floating command centre above the action and render window panes over your view of the map do they? : Flight simulators : obscure your view with the cockpit. The cockpit IS your world. Much of it is functional instrumentation. : Many games with sniper rifles mask off : the screen when you look through the scope. That party for gameplay reasons too. You get the higher magnification and greater accuracy at the expense of how much you can see. It also focuses you and helps you concentrate on the aiming. If you look at the reticle designs inside the sniper rifle, it is highly functional and often very minimalistic.
