Showing her face in a window on my HUD makes her more remote for me. Its as if she is calling from far away. Of course maybe she is, maybe she is doing something vital somewhere else.

HUDs have always been about presenting only the most vital info in the clearest and least distracting manor. The purpose behind them is to avoid you looking inside the cockpit and so missing important visual info of threats.
: And 343 have determined that a visual display of Cortana is necessary info.
Its never necessary to see her face when she talks, its certainly not worth obscuring your vision for.
OK, maybe it will help to see how mental she is becoming so it may serve a story purpose. But can't Jen just convey this with her voice acting?
If this doesn't help the story by showing her descent into madness then its just annoying eye candy that I could do without. The faces don't even look convincing.

Then just cut her out completely.
Here's an idea if 343i want us to be able to customize our armor then let us customize the HUD. In my setup video calls are off as are helmet effects.
