Sure, if you're okay with getting a piece of crap.
Most cheap flat panels out there are horrible to play most games on compared with a decent SD CRT. Sure, they resolve high-frequency detail, but between the blurry motion and terrible contrast (for LCDs anyway) and the horrible input lag, at what cost? When I first got CEA, I hooked my 360 up to my roomie's HD LCD, deciding that my first stab at the game ought to show its details at the game's full resolution. Half an hour later, I was back on my SD trinitron.
Reliably getting a decent HDTV still requires a bit of money; at least a few hundred dollars. (Well, you could probably get a really good TV for a lot less if you thumbed through craigslist, especially if you're combing for HD CRTs, but I feel like many people wouldn't consider craigslist to be a "reliable" source.)
