Halo 2 splits side-to-side if you're on widescreen, and top-to-bottom if you're on fullscreen, as suggested in the wording of my post.
Unlike most other top-bottom splits in the series, Halo 2's is unfortunately more a vertical crop of the the other views than a horizontal extension of them, but I personally think it's a lot better than the side-to-side widescreen split, which is like looking through a sideways mail slot.
