In Response To: Contact Harvest (Dervish) : A very good point, but Contact Harvest adds a little more food for thought. : In addition to being a great standalone story, Contact Harvest was Staten's : dumping ground (in a good way) for backstory that didn't fit into Halo 2 : and 3. It answered lots of questions about the history of the Covenant, : especially the historical context for the relationships among the : Prophets, Brutes and Elites. It gave us our best insight into the : motivations of Truth and Regret, and contextualized parts of the Halo 3 : terminals with the scene with Mendicant Bias. : All of this would have been helpful for a first playthrough of Halo 3, but it : came out a couple months afterward, as I recall. I actually thought this : was very good timing. Contact Harvest answered some lingering questions : from Halo 3 while they were still fresh in my mind, and made the game's : fiction richer on subsequent playthroughs. Had the book come out before or : alongside Halo 3, however, it might have been a little too foreshadow-y, : if not spoiler-y. : Since Greg Bear's 3rd book will probably come out in early 2013, this will be : pretty similar to the Halo 3-Contact Harvest situation. Here's hoping it : gives us that extra bit of after-the-fact insight into Halo 4's lingering : questions, just like Contact Harvest did. Good point. On the other hand it also confused the Human-Forerunner connection a bit with what we've gotten since then :)
