Contact Harvest

In Response To: Preventing an Uprising - BTF#10 (Dani)

A very good point, but Contact Harvest adds a little more food for thought.

In addition to being a great standalone story, Contact Harvest was Staten's dumping ground (in a good way) for backstory that didn't fit into Halo 2 and 3. It answered lots of questions about the history of the Covenant, especially the historical context for the relationships among the Prophets, Brutes and Elites. It gave us our best insight into the motivations of Truth and Regret, and contextualized parts of the Halo 3 terminals with the scene with Mendicant Bias.

All of this would have been helpful for a first playthrough of Halo 3, but it came out a couple months afterward, as I recall. I actually thought this was very good timing. Contact Harvest answered some lingering questions from Halo 3 while they were still fresh in my mind, and made the game's fiction richer on subsequent playthroughs. Had the book come out before or alongside Halo 3, however, it might have been a little too foreshadow-y, if not spoiler-y.

Since Greg Bear's 3rd book will probably come out in early 2013, this will be pretty similar to the Halo 3-Contact Harvest situation. Here's hoping it gives us that extra bit of after-the-fact insight into Halo 4's lingering questions, just like Contact Harvest did.
