In Response To: Re: This conversation has gone in an awkward direc (Leviathan) : That's one of the issues with debates and discussions: everyone has their own : little variant of terms and definitions, and it will often dissolve down : to nailing those subtle changes so that you analyze the person's point of : view correctly. May I say something? Both sides are getting so radical with their ideas that even they are getting something wrong. "Unnecessary unlockables" as I call them. Let me put in an example for everyone. Imagine the progression of the single-player level 1 to Level 2. Imagine a game designer programmed it where even if you reach the end of Level 1, a screen pops up and "You must be at least Rank 10 in multiplayer to go to Level 2." That would be an unnecessary unlockable. However, this is an impractical and illogical for anyone to try this method of gaming. So thank god, none have. To put it in a more realistic standpoint. Imagine if in Halo 4 you wanted to drive the Warthog in battle, but when you go to the driver's seat the screen says "You must unlock drive ability using Spartan points." Or go into the gunner seat and it says "Unlock Turret using Spartan points." This is similar to a Battlefield style play. Not something 343i is going for, but something everyone dreads might happen. What 343i sounds like they are doing is something more similar to Mass Effect 3. You can unlock a an ability or a gun to use in the game to start off with. (However, they balance it so you will not see someone packing an RL or Sniper Rifle in the first few seconds of the match.) The abilities sound like a one time usage. Once you use it, that's it until you die and respawn with a new one. What I don't want to see is mico-managing where like say if I put one more Spartan point on my DMR I can shoot more accurately than you even though you're using the same gun. That nonsense is another thing that drives me up the wall sometimes. Or the fact that if I put one more point of damage on my armor I can take more damage than you. The biggest issue is not what they do, but how they balance it and we don't want to see a game being unbalanced. The balancing was what made Halo the greatest multiplayer to play. From my view, it was the one game where skill wasn't determined by frame rate or what gun you start out with. If you found a powerful on the map and took the risk to grab it, then use it by all means you've earned it. It's frustrating when you play battlefield 3 and you want to pilot the jet, but you can't even get off the ground because right off the bat, they target you with homing missiles. Oh and the only way to gain your own homing missiles is you have to get like 4 kills in the jet using just machine guns. I spent hours JUST trying to get this and it was the most frustrating I have ever been in a game. Let's try it on Halo, take the ghost. You can have boost for it and guns, but say they wanted to use the Battlefield 3 method where you only get the most and guns if you run over enough people. Oh and you don't start out with the guns. You have to unlock that. That would force my hand to play with the ghost as soon as I am out the gate just to gain those even basic of equipment to make the ghost a formidable. BTW, it is weird seeing someone get into a jet and they get missiles, but if you get in the same jet, you don't. It may work for Battlefield, but I don't know think if it will work for Halo. So I hope they don't just say "Hey, this works good in such and such game, it will be perfect for Halo" and then it completely bombs it. I am going give them tons of credit and say they are not that stupid. It's just the fear itself when they use things that sound similar to what other games do.
