In Response To: Re: Change for change's sake. (Cody Miller) I read the whole thing twice already and I am not entirely sure what you are saying. Are you saying this generation aspects stuff for free and we SHOULD work for the best equipment? In any case, I think you're looking at this in a little extreme view. Whatever the case, I want to say this. Games are supposed to be recreational. As any entertainment, we are supposed to be relaxing to let our minds go. We are not being paid to play these games and it is not essential to our lives to play these games. I for one just like to have fun and Halo was a game that provided that. Whenever I played Battlefield or Call of Duty I always feel like I am in a competition. Fair enough, some people like that, but I don't. I feel our gaming community gets stressed out way too much because of the competitive nature of the games. I have seen FIGHTING GAMES turns even the most modest people in raging blood drunk people all because they get "cheated" out of a win. You say we need to be challenged or the game isn't fun. Fair enough, but there are different ways to achieve this challenge than using the "Collect them all" challenge. Single-player it works okay, but multiplayer it makes it frustrating at time. I can't tell you how many times I got killed in COD or battlefield because I don't have the equipment to match them. This is why I shun away from multiplayer now and like Co-op better. So where is the line drawn between "Playful challenge" to "Frustrating challenge?" This is why I hated MOST Call of Duty so much, except for Call of Duty 4. (I'll explain why in a second.) There is one thing that remains the same: We have the most fun if we are killing things. Now, if I get no kills because I am using the basic equipment against opponents that have everything at their disposal...that's not fun. That's frustrating. Especially when I need the kills to UNLOCK the good stuff. I need to get a lucky a few games or play against stupid people. COD4 was the one game that I have seen where the starting weapons weren't useless and you could actually use them. The starting weapons were in fact better than most of the higher class weapons in other games. Now, I don't mind dying in games, but when I die hundreds of times in a row, because someone starts out with a better weapon than I do it's stop being fun. And when it stops being fun, then I want to play something else that is fun. I understand what you mean, but remember it is supposed to be first and for most a game. Games are supposed to recreational and NOT supposed to be back-breaking work. I don't want to be frustrated during a game. I want it to take my frustration rather than add to it. If it means sacrficing some challenge than so be it. If anything, I think we need less challenges because gamers today are starting to see games as a life or death situation. I swear I have a former friend who got SOO angry at a game if he didn't get the top spot on the leaderboards. And this idea and way of thinking is more common than you think. I barely play multiplayer with some friends anymore for this simple reason. I only play multiplayer with the guys who really don't care about wins or kills. Only to have fun and because we only care about the fun, we end up winning most of the time anyway.
