In Response To: Present thoughts about the future *long* (Hedgemony) I really, really would like to agree with your very reasonable post, but I can't, and I feel more like Phoenix on this issue. Put simply, 343I is an untested developer — the only things they have under their belt is some expanded universe content, and ill-conceived title update for Reach (which was the first big warning flags that said I should be wary of how 343I will handle Halo), and an enhanced port of the original Halo (and most of the work on that was actually done by Saber Interactive) — with poor communication skills as compared to Bungie. I really want to give them the benefit of the doubt, but for everything that gets me hyped for Halo 4, that hype gets absolutely dashed by the revelation of some new feature that is, at least at first glance, antithetical to everything Bungie established in the series. And I've been critical of Bungie plenty in the past on everything from weapon balancing in Halo 2 & 3 to the retcons in Reach. You all know that. So imagine how I'm going to feel about some new, untested developer created solely to take over the franchise after Bungie left Microsoft, a developer who has given us little assurance that they are a worthy successor to the creators of Xbox's flagship franchise. They have done very little to assure me that Halo has been left in good hands. Again, it all comes down to communication. At this point in development, we had plenty of info from Bungie regarding all the Halo games they made. Before the winters of 2007 and 2010 were over, we had in-game screenshots, vidocs, and magazine articles for Halo 3 & Reach, as well as a deluge of information in the Weekly Updates. The information was clear and concise. Bungie were clear and effective communicators and were quick to clarify any concerns. 343I, on the other hand, has been very tight-lipped and more secretive than the CIA by comparison. Up until early last month, all they showed us of Halo 4 was a CGI announce trailer, a concept art video, and some audio recording clips. It's the spring before launch and E3 is just a few weeks away, and we are just now getting our first bits of information. It started with the Xbox Spring Showcase from several weeks ago, which introduced 343I's first vidoc, but said vidoc was a simple "First Look" video that give little real information, and we just got a second vidoc introducing us to H4's music team. Almost all the meager amount of information we've received so far has come from second hand sources rather than from 343I themselves, most recently in the big Game Informer blowout, and much of that information has been disconcerting at best, something exacerbated by the info coming in the form of brief blurbs from the article writer and occasionally a short, direct quote from someone at 343I. Take the whole issues surrounding "perks" and "Spartan points," which has caused some of us, myself included, to accuse 343I of pushing Halo multiplayer away from its classic balancing scheme and towards an unbalanced Call of Duty-style Skinner box type of multiplayer. This was first mentioned during the Spring Showcase and was brought up again in the new GI article where Halo 4's multiplayer lead design Josh Holmes stated, and I quote, "You're going to start off as a recruit and proceed through the ranks. As you rank up, you'll unlock more abilities. You gain Spartan points, which you can use to purchase items to put in your loadouts. You can construct these loadouts around your preferred play style." Sounds like Call of Duty to me, and it simply reinforces what the media was saying after the Spring Showcase. It's been an issue of conversation and consternation for weeks now, with no real clarification from 343I. Just vague assurances that we should worry, that all will be explained in due time. Why can't it be explained now... not at E3, not next month, but now? Every weekly Halo Bulletin that goes by fails to take the opportunity to clarify things and ease concerns. Considering that they have some massive shoes to fill by taking over from where Bungie left off, it kind of behooves them to be just as effective communicators as Bungie was, especially considering that without a public beta this go-around, none of us will have the opportunity to actually play the game in some form before it gets released this fall. So, I disagree that we should just all chill out and stop being Negative Nancies and just assume everything will turn out right, because there's plenty of room for concern here, and 343I's poor communication and their minimal amount of divulging of first-hand information combined with media reports of the state of Halo 4 isn't helping. Maybe I and others feel a sense of entitlement here. Is that sense unwarranted? I think not. Considering that I've invested more time, money, and interest on Halo than any other video game series in the past decade — I've spent over $600 on the games, DLC, and novels, I've spent months worth of time playing the games (over 40 days of play time in Reach alone, plus at least another 60-70 days in Halo 2 & 3 matchmaking), and I've spent countless hours writing about Halo and being a regularly active community member (the last online community I spent this much time with was the PlanetNamek.com message board, a DBZ fansite from a decade ago) — I think I've earned it, as so has everyone else who has devoted so much time and energy to this franchise. I'm still going to get Halo 4 the day it comes out, pre-ordered and picked up at a midnight launch. The game has a tremendous amount of potential. The new setting and story arc alone are perhaps the biggest game changers in the series to date, bringing with it new characters, new factions, new enemies and new alliances, new weapons and new vehicles, and new conflicts. What little of the music we were shown on Wednesday sounded very good. The graphics look stellar, even though I'm not a fan of some of the new designs (but that is purely a matter of personal taste). The environments look amazing. But there's still the issue of gameplay, and 343I has not be very forthcoming on that front. I think they kind of owe it to us to be more so. That is all.
