But that will only be because those who : cared will care no longer. That last bit takes a while. You don't stop caring until you kick and scream about it for a few years. After a while, you get disappointed enough to just stop caring. At that point all you can do is look on as the thing you once liked goes in a direction that you patently don't care for. But there are a few diamonds in the rough that keep you coming back... Personally, I actually Halo 4 has some interesting potential story-wise. Much of the mystery from Halo 1 and 2 seems to be coming back. Of course, the depth and coherency of the plot-lines are still very much unknown... it could all be a very superficial and confusing Reach-style trainwreck. I can only hope it's handled well... but as burned as I've been regarding Halo stories before, I just can't bring myself to have any positive expectations. Yes. That's right. I feel a sense of entitlement to a good story. I feel that investing over 10 years of my life to being a fan of Halo games entitles me to that. The original post is actually really concerning to me. It seems to suggest that people who are worried or disappointed have to shut up. That's terrible. Pretending that the developer is a benevolent can-do-no-wrong purveyor of $50-100 doses of joy is discounting the whole artistic process. When you accept a lesser product without voicing your concerns, you're doing yourself and the developer a disservice. As a developer, if enough people throw their 2 cents into the same pot, you can end up with a wealth of valuable information. Ask yourself: Where was all of this negativity prior to Halo 2? How about Halo 3? What about before ODST? How about Reach? Did you notice a trend? If you didn't, I'd be concerned. Yes, speculation prior to release has gotten increasingly negative over the years... but that increased cynicism is not some random occurrence. Rather than fold our arms and say that the fanbase is filled with spoiled brats or the overly nostalgic, maybe it's worth thinking about what people are concerned about. There's no dearth of "What doesn't work" posts. Maybe, if we want some positivity, we can ask "What worked?" Personally, I just don't have the wherewithal to outline how I feel about it anymore. In a different time, I might have whipped up a post on what made the Halo story work, why it gradually and colossally dropped the ball over the years, and why I have tepid but existent hopes for Halo 4. But no one wants to hear me toot my horn anymore. :)
